As a Brighton Beach native, I was thrilled to discover Little Brooklyn - Food House at 13635 Tamiami Trail in North Port, Florida. This family-owned treasure, worth the drive from Sarasota, transports you to an Eastern European food store on my childhood streets, brimming with Soviet classics. For just $13.99, the meal special delivers a hearty spread—soup, two entrees, two sides, rye bread, and fruit punch—served in portions generous enough to make any babushka proud. Stepping inside feels like walking into a family’s home. The cozy, counter-service setup hums with warmth, and the staff greet you like long-lost relatives, their smiles as comforting as a warm bowl of borscht. The atmosphere captures the bustling charm of a Brighton Beach market, with a few tables inside and out for savoring your meal. It’s not a deli but a true Eastern European cafeteria vibe, where every dish feels handmade with love. The steam table overflows with all the Soviet classics you’d expect, while the cold case tempts with fresh salads and sides perfect for eating in or taking home. The owners’ hospitality shines, making you feel like you’re dining at their kitchen table, sharing stories over rye bread. Little Brooklyn - Food House is a must-visit for anyone craving authentic Eastern European fare that tastes like home. The unbeatable value and family-like welcome make every bite a nostalgic delight. Bring your stretchy pants and appetite for a meal that’s a pelmeni-packed love letter to tradition. You’ll leave full, happy, and already planning your return!

There are underrated places, and then there are true diamonds in the rough. This story is about the latter. The short story is, delicious high quality food and portions, ideal friendly informative service, and excellent prices. The long story is, so there I was, just arrived and hungry at an Italian pizza place known for its clam chowder because the owners are from New England and I saw a lunch special for soup and sandwich for 9.99. After driving out of my way over there, it turns out that was only when they just opened. Now, a soup and sandwich would run me about $25, before tax and tip. I decide I don’t want the clam chowder that bad, and leave to drive another 13 minutes to this place, Little Brooklyn - Food House. FYI I’m not from New England, I was born in the Soviet Union, present day Ukraine, but moved to the USA when I was 3. I get to Lil’ BK (short for Little Brooklyn), and the lady greets me with a smile and a good day and patiently explains their lunch special of two meats, two sides, plus soup, for 13.99. My eyes are shining. After thoroughly reviewing my choices, I select the harcho soup over borscht because it has lamb (!) and beef. Building my meal I add a whole thigh of chicken and mushroom with cheese, barley with mushrooms (the mushrooms really were calling my name but they have a lot to choose from if that’s not your thing), and vareniki with potato’s because was feeling nostalgic for grandmas cooking. And then…sea bass. No joke - I got a huge slab of sea bass over some special stuff I got no idea what it is, but…I love sea bass. “Branzino”, as they also call it in those fancy Italian places while they overcharge you for it. Check the picture and see if you can figure it out what that stuff under it is but it was. absolutely. fantastic. Then I get to the register. As I’m reaching for a Diet Coke, that same friendly lady informs me that with the lunch special I get included bread and kompot. I’m floored, and reminded of the classic Soviet movie “Preklycheniye Shurika”, where the big construction bro turns to the lunch lady and asks “A kompot?” I chuckle to myself but don’t say this out loud. I’m excited to pay, and eat. As they ring me up and I find out many Slavs are leaving socialist-leaning cities for the common sense of the Floridian government. Me too, man. What is it with us Soviets always fleeing communism? I’m getting deja vu here. Anyway. Even for a Slav soul this story is getting a little Leo-Tolstoyish. But to finish - everything I ate was delicious. The harcho exceeded expectations. The cheese and mushrooms on the chicken got me the protein I needed from it. Vareniki in butter hit the spot, especially using the bread to mop up some of those juices. The kompot was a comfort, like I used to have as a child on summer vacation before going back outside and under the heat of the sun. The barley and mushrooms kept everything lubricated together. But the sea bass. Ohhh, wow, the sea bass. Just…so, so, so wow. It was the crown jewel of this headdress meal fit for a king. Flaky, tender, meaty, delicious, popping and exploding with complimentary flavors. And yes, I ate and drank it all. And enjoyed it thoroughly. Thank you. The End.

Dining at this Russian food restaurant was a truly heartwarming experience. The food was absolutely amazing—every bite brought back memories of my childhood home. The perfect borscht, the pelmeni, the chicken cutlet , everything tasted authentic and full of love. It felt like a home-cooked meal from a time I’ve missed dearly. The atmosphere was cozy and welcoming, and the staff were kind and attentive. If you’re looking for a genuine taste of Russian cuisine, fresh homemade cooked food this place is a must. Highly recommended!

This is some of the best food I’ve ever had, in a charmingly down-home setting, served by friendly and rightfully proud people, and at a cost I could hardly believe.

Kid approved! Feels like home, tastes like food at grandma’s house! Absolutely delicious and well prepared food. Staff is super sweet. The portions are unbelievable. Clean, fast, tasty. Can’t wait to come back.

We went to Warm Mineral Springs and everyone was speaking Russian. So, naturally we thought there must be a Russian restaurant close by. Little Brooklyn is a Ukrainian/Russian restaurant. Without a doubt this is the best authentic ethnic restaurant I've ever eaten at. The borscht is amazing! The roasted eggplant was amazing! The stuffed chicken thigh, amazing! Not to mention the brown bread to the apple blintz for dessert, amazing. I know nothing about Ukrainian/Russian food, but the staff is incredibly helpful and accommodating. If you are visiting the North Port area this is a gem among your dining out options.

I don't get to North Port much these days, haven't for the last decade, really. When I was a regular visitor there wasn't much here, honestly. You had to drive to Port Charlotte or Venice for almost anything. But that was then. North Port has nearly everything now, car dealers, big-box stores, nail salons and Little Brooklyn Food House. Of course, like most of this area, most things are on US 41, the only real through road. When I saw the sign "Food House" I knew this was a place I needed to check out. A small space in a strip mall (sound familiar? ) about the size of a barbershop. Tables on the left, cash register & food on the right, displayed in trays, looking delicious. Inviting, friendly owner calmly answers all questions. You can get everything to go (duh) paying per pound or eat in. Lunch combos with or without fish as the meat. Everything looks so good! One of three different fish offerings is stuffed sea bass. Yes, please! With each meal is a soup which rotates daily or borsch (Ukrainian, no 't'). I got the best chicken noodle soup ever with a bit of dill & garlic added to go with that sea bass and two sides. I don't know what the sides are called but one had cabbage & both were nummy. A cup of sweet tea is included as is some good rye bread, if desired. The canned drink is Duonos Gira, a Lithuanian drink called kvass. Under 1% alcohol and made from bread, it is very tasty and quite refreshing (Finally found some). There are other versions available, too. This is food your grandmother makes, authentic, from 'the old country'. And I learned North Port has a sizeable Ukrainian population, too. ???????? Give it a try next time your in the area. I know I'll go back.
